After finishing a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering specialized in energy from Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran, Soheil started a fully funded M.Sc. position in 2009 at the University of Saskatchewan. After finishing his M.Sc. in mechanical engineering, he founded a business in automotive industry, in Saskatoon, SK. These 6+ years as a small business owner and operator gave him an opportunity to learn how to manage time, budget, and employees. His passion in automotive allowed him to acquire a wide range of theoretical and practical skills and knowledge that are now a transferable treasure for his future endeavors. In early 2018 he decided to go back to applied research and with help from his friend, they wrote a winning proposal that was awarded by Mitacs to start developing a system that is called UCTUPUS. He is happily married and has two children.
After winning the prestigious Ontario Trillium Scholarship in 2013, I started my Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor, Ontario. During the last year of my studies I joined a start-up venture called UCTUPUS. Since the early days, UCTUPUS has been an exciting opportunity to employ my skills in wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things, and thermal management design in a challenging yet fun and friendly atmosphere. In addition to my professional life, I study personality psychology in my spare time and enjoy thinking about why people behave the way they do.
Pooya received the Dean’s scholarship for his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in a research group with over 20 years of focus on innovative HVAC solutions supervised by Professor Carey Simonson. He holds a second M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology with specialization in Energy Systems. Since his B.Sc. thesis in HVAC systems design in 2008, he has been an active HVAC society member with over 6 years work experience in energy sector. He has been involved in designing and selecting components based on heating, cooling, and power demand by considering energy analysis and cost estimates as a part of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects. His academic and industrial background allows him to understand thermal problems in buildings and offer efficient solutions. Besides his professional life, he enjoys his family life, camping, and reading books.
Majid has been the CEO of Horizon Automation Group since 1996. As the owner and chief engineer of the company, in the last 22 years his team has designed and manufactured a lineup of over 40 generic and mass-produced products for building and industrial automation and over 70 custom Building Management Systems (BMS) for large-scale applications like hotels and hospitals. He created a brand called National Protect (NP) that has a great reputation of quality and longevity in his home country. His passion about perfectionism, customer appreciation, and quality control has helped his company to reach a very low return rate of under 2% of its total sales. All of his custom BMS products sold since 2000 are still in service. Majid holds 2 bachelors’ degrees in Robotics and Electrical Engineering, along with a Master’s in Bio-Electrical Engineering. He is super passionate about learning and research and beside circuit design and optimization has many other skills like application programming for both iOS and Android, along with RTL and RTOS programming. Majid “loves and lives” his profession. In the last 22 years, he has spent on an average over 80 hours a week on his career to create a long path to success. His minimal leisure time is the time for travelling and off-roading! UCTUPUS is fortunate to have Majid on board as his skills are essential to help the UCTUPUS team in mating a sophisticated hardware to its state-of-the-art control algorithm.
